Part 1: You Are What You Eat


Every woman knows you are what you eat; it’s like it is hardwired into our DNA! What we may not know is just how relevant this knowledge is today, and how not knowing what you eat, may actually have far more dire consequences than putting on a few extra kilograms. We have all heard of GMO’s, but do we really know enough about them, to make an informed decision about if we want to put them into our bodies and our family dinners?

If you are still unaware if you are eating GMO foods or not, then you definitely need to read this post. Let’s start at the beginning so we really know what a GMO is, how it came to be in our food chain, and what they can do to your body. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism, and they have come about through a dangerous alliance between corporate America and the government. They chose to put corporate profits and political power, in front of it’s own citizens health, starting in 1995 when they were first approved by the FDA.

The information I am going to share with you, came as a result of an unprecedented coalition of scientists, religious leaders, health professionals and consumers. In 1998, they sued the federal US Government, and the lawsuit forced the FDA to turn over 44,000 pages of internal government memos into the public domain.

Information they never wanted us to see!

So what exactly is genetic engineering? It is when using advanced scientific technology, genes are forcibly transferred between two species, that under normal circumstances cannot breed naturally. It creates a unique form of biochemistry in the DNA of plants, which the human body cannot recognise as food. Changing just one gene in an organism, can result in dozens, possibly hundreds of molecular components to change.

The problem for us humans eating such GMO food, is that our extremely clever bodies see this strange mix of components in the food as foreign and potentially dangerous. As is our bodies normal response to invaders, our immune system creates an inflammatory response, to try and neutralise and expel the threat. It is this chronic inflammation that is now widely recognised as the cause of chronic diseases such as:

Cancer, Heart Disease, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s Disease, Digestive Disorders, Reflux, Celiacs Disease, Allergies, Asthma, Diabetes, Depression, Anxiety, Obesity, Dementia and even Autism; which has increased by 600% since GMO’s came on the market!

Ask any person what are the illnesses that are ravaging our population in any particular age group of the population, and if your talking about children it will be autism, allergies and asthma; a teenager or young person it will be depression, anxiety and obesity, a middle aged person it will be diabetes, obesity and cancer and then later in life, heart disease, alzheimers and early dementia. Take out the GMO part of our diet, and imagine what our health profile could be.

These new organisms that never existed in nature, now make up the MAJORITY of the food we eat! These crops can either produce their own pesticides, or can withstand large doses of herbicides like Roundup. Roundup is made by the same company ‘Monsanto”, who is at the leading edge of GMO production. So when we consume GMO’s, we not only get GMO modified food, but also huge doses of physiologically destroying pesticides, either genetically produced inside the plant to repel pests, or which is sprayed on the crops by farmers wearing head to toe protective suites, goggles and masks! That sure does not sound like something I want to be eating.

The promise was to increase the yield of crops and hence profits (a fact which has proved to be untrue) and came with contracts that every year, new seeds had to be purchased from Monsanto by the farmer, indebting millions of farmers, especially in the USA and India, where the suicide rate of impoverished farmers has dramatically risen since GMO seeds were sold with the promise of greater yields.

Time magazine has called inflammation “the secret killer”. They said

“It destabilises cholesterol deposits in the coronary arteries, leading to heart attacks and potentially even strokes.”

“It chews up nerve cells in the brains of Alzheimer’s victims. It may even foster the proliferation of abnormal cells and facilitate their transformation into cancer.”

“In other words, chronic inflammation may be the engine that drives many of the most feared illnesses of middle and old age.”

Dr P.M Bhargava, a leading world biologist reviewed 600 scientific journals and concluded that GM foods in the US, are largely responsible for the increase in many serious diseases. Dr Robin Bernhoft, a Harvard trained Doctor and Director of the Bernhoft Centre for Advanced Medicine, in Djai, California; found directly that when GMO foods were taken out of patients diets, that their health improves. Perhaps one of the most recent discoveries concerning responses to eating GMO foods, is the result of infertility in men and women, which has been successfully reversed, when the patient completely removes GMO’s from their diet (and it doesn’t take very long). If GMO’s are allowed to stay in our food supply, then what is the future for human survival, if it renders our population infertile?

Scientists have come out all over the world and stated that GMO’s were never properly tested before they were given approval by the FDA. Further more, extensive studies have since found grave concerns for the use of GMO’s, and has resulted in GMO seeds to be banned throughout many forward thinking countries in Europe, Russia, Scandinavia and South America. However while they do not grow GMO foods directly, they do not stop the sale of products which contain GMO foods inside them, so the chance that waste products will contaminate their true seeds, is still a very real problem, as well as for the health of their populations.

The rest of us, including Australia, continue to be the guinea pigs as a part of the worldwide money making experiment. At the very least we should be able to see if a food products is sourced from GMO ingredients, so those of us in the ‘know’, can actively avoid them and regain our health. However in Australia, despite just having a recent overhaul of labelling laws, where the origin of a products needs to appear on the label; they continued to fail to address the elephant in the room, by not allowing our population the right to know exactly what we are putting in our mouths, GMO products or not. Why they would do this to us, when there has now been almost 20 years of studies telling us of the huge amount of harm they do to our health, is a question for another day.
